Vietnam, 1970 - 1971,
A Troop, 3rd of the 17th Air Calvary, U.S. Army
Pictures from
my (Dan Cannon's) 1970-1971 tour in the Vietnamese cities of:
Cam Ranh Bay, Bein Hoa,
Di an, Soc Trang, Lai-Khe, Quan Loi, An Loc
My entry into Army, 25-March-1969, age 17, to Viet Nam, 11-January-1970,
age 18,
exit Viet Nam & Army, 31-October-1971, age 19, 2 years, 7 months active
duty,
21 months in Vietnam
Some pictures have been contributed, found on the internet, and many I
took...
I know somebody has the complete A Troop Yearbook Picture album, from I
think 1970 or 1971,
on line or as scanned in files, as I saw it/them
posted in the years 1999-2000.
I would love to post all those pictures here if somebody can provide
them.

several models, the Loch, Ranger, Kiowa. Can't remember the exact
designations so won't try
Chinouk, mostly used for
cargo and troop carrier
Sky Crane, mostly used to
cargo and to pick up crashed aircraft. Like the Chinouk in the
picture to the left

Think the city was Lai Khai
3rd of the 17th Air Cavalry, U.S. Army
Hard to remember, this group
of pictures was either Lai Kahi, Quan Loi, or An Loc
3rd of the 17th Air Cavalry, U.S. Army
Think this tower went down
in Lai Khai. And, that I have climbed up it prior to its
destruction
Off hand, I can't remember for
sure which city this is. Thinking it was An Loc. BUT, might
have been Quan Loi. Think the trees are all rubber trees but might
be wrong
As a troop we would travel from city to city (Soc Trang, An Loc, Quan Loi,
Lai Khai, and work with the Vietnamese Army and perform our missions.
We would stay for anywhere from 45 days to 6 months

My room was in the further
(about in the middle of the picture) on this road on the right.
Across from the TOC and First Sergeants office. I had a trap door
under my bed so my girl friends could come and visit and not be seen
entering or exiting. They would then exit the side door of the
building

My (Dan's) room, our troop
was stationed either in the city of Anloc. The door to my room was
opposite of the First Sergeant's office. Thus, I had a trap door
under my bed where my female visitors could come and go unseen
This is under my bed where
the trap door was. Also, this was my dog, named Lizzy, named after
an ex-Vietnamese girlfriend. I had my dog for over a year and had
to leave her there
Lizzy's pups on my bed with
a visiting friend in the picture
Think this might have been
an air traffic control tower in Lai Khai
Me (Dan Cannon) doing my
daily job in the TOC. Basically directing and managing the daily
missions along with the Executive Officer (XO)

I was a Sergeant in charge
of the Tactical Operations Center (TOC). Pictured above is Robert Steck, a drafted college professor who was not happy being there and
working for an 18 year old! But we were friends and had a
good time!

I am the guy in about the
right center looking up. About the 6th head from the left with
shirt. We
were watching a strip show in either
An Loc or Quan Loi
I found this on the internet about 10 years ago. Had no idea where
it came from or who took it and was quite surprised to see something
like that turn up
The troops partying.
